Line-of-Credit Draw Fees: Price the Way You Will Actually Borrow

A draw fee can change the cost of a credit line used frequently. Compare the complete expected pattern of withdrawals, repayments and fees rather than the interest rate alone.

The key decision

A draw fee can change the cost of a credit line used frequently. Compare the complete expected pattern of withdrawals, repayments and fees rather than the interest rate alone.

What to consider before choosing

Ask whether each draw attracts a percentage fee, flat fee or other charge, and whether repeated draws restart or combine repayment schedules. Check any minimum draw. Model your likely borrowing month and a more intensive period. The cost of ten small draws can differ materially from one larger draw, but holding unnecessary borrowed cash also has a cost.

Your preparation checklist

  • Count expected withdrawals during a typical cycle.
  • Check minimum draws and repeated charges.
  • Compare a consolidated funding plan without overborrowing.

Put the complete offer on one page

Record gross funding, deductions, existing balances paid, net new cash, every payment date and the total obligation. Add the proposed schedule to the existing debt calendar and compare the lowest projected cash balance, not just the average month. Check whether the offer includes mandatory fees that are not reflected in its headline price.

Ask for an early-settlement example and the consequence of slower receipts. Keep interest rates, flat charges, factor rates and annualized estimates labelled accurately. The calculators here are planning illustrations, not quotes, regulatory disclosures or evidence that an application will be approved.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: a 2% fee on each 5,000 draw is 100. Six such draws create 600 in draw charges before interest, even if each balance is outstanding briefly.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

Do not assume a line’s advertised rate captures all usage costs.

A question worth asking

What charges arise each time I use or renew the facility?
