Stress-Test a Business Loan Before You Sign

A stress test asks whether the business can keep operating when receipts are lower or later than expected. It is more useful than checking affordability only in a best-case month.

The key decision

A stress test asks whether the business can keep operating when receipts are lower or later than expected. It is more useful than checking affordability only in a best-case month.

What to consider before choosing

Start with your base forecast, then reduce receipts while keeping essential costs realistic. Test a separate delayed-payment scenario because timing risk differs from lower sales. Add the proposed collections, all current debt and a minimum operating reserve. A negative result is a reason to revisit the size, structure or project, not to hide the assumptions.

Your preparation checklist

  • Test lower receipts and delayed receipts separately.
  • Keep essential payroll, tax and supplier obligations visible.
  • Calculate the lowest cash balance across the period.

Put the complete offer on one page

Record gross funding, deductions, existing balances paid, net new cash, every payment date and the total obligation. Add the proposed schedule to the existing debt calendar and compare the lowest projected cash balance, not just the average month. Check whether the offer includes mandatory fees that are not reflected in its headline price.

Ask for an early-settlement example and the consequence of slower receipts. Keep interest rates, flat charges, factor rates and annualized estimates labelled accurately. The calculators here are planning illustrations, not quotes, regulatory disclosures or evidence that an application will be approved.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: receipts down 20% with unchanged fixed costs can erase the margin available for new payments. The site’s cash-buffer calculator illustrates this effect without predicting an approval.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

A stress-test percentage is an assumption, not a universal lender rule.
