Early Business Loan Repayment: Ask for a Payout Calculation

Early repayment does not always reduce cost by the amount a borrower expects. Interest-based loans, fixed-fee products and receivables purchases can have different payout rules.

The key decision

Early repayment does not always reduce cost by the amount a borrower expects. Interest-based loans, fixed-fee products and receivables purchases can have different payout rules.

What to consider before choosing

Request a written payout illustration for the date you may settle. Check minimum charges, prepayment fees, rebates and conditions on discounts. Compare the saved cost with any cost of the replacement financing. For an advance, the purchased amount may not shrink proportionally just because collections finish earlier.

Your preparation checklist

  • Ask for payout examples at more than one date.
  • Identify conditions that cancel a discount or rebate.
  • Confirm when debits stop and releases are issued.

Put the complete offer on one page

Record gross funding, deductions, existing balances paid, net new cash, every payment date and the total obligation. Add the proposed schedule to the existing debt calendar and compare the lowest projected cash balance, not just the average month. Check whether the offer includes mandatory fees that are not reflected in its headline price.

Ask for an early-settlement example and the consequence of slower receipts. Keep interest rates, flat charges, factor rates and annualized estimates labelled accurately. The calculators here are planning illustrations, not quotes, regulatory disclosures or evidence that an application will be approved.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: paying a fixed 65,000 obligation in four months instead of six may not save 5,000 unless the agreement provides that reduction. Faster payment alone is not evidence of a discount.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

Do not rely on verbal promises that early settlement will be cheap.

A question worth asking
