Business Loan Origination Fees: How Deductions Change the Cost

An origination or arrangement fee can reduce the amount deposited or increase the financed balance. Ask how the fee is collected and include it in the true cost of the transaction.

The key decision

An origination or arrangement fee can reduce the amount deposited or increase the financed balance. Ask how the fee is collected and include it in the true cost of the transaction.

What to consider before choosing

Separate provider charges, broker charges and third-party costs. Check whether a fee is refundable if funding does not occur and whether it is charged again on renewal. A fee percentage is meaningful only when the calculation base is known. Never assume the displayed principal equals spendable cash.

Your preparation checklist

  • Ask which amount the fee percentage is applied to.
  • Confirm whether the fee is deducted, paid separately or financed.
  • Include repeated fees when comparing renewals.

Put the complete offer on one page

Record gross funding, deductions, existing balances paid, net new cash, every payment date and the total obligation. Add the proposed schedule to the existing debt calendar and compare the lowest projected cash balance, not just the average month. Check whether the offer includes mandatory fees that are not reflected in its headline price.

Ask for an early-settlement example and the consequence of slower receipts. Keep interest rates, flat charges, factor rates and annualized estimates labelled accurately. The calculators here are planning illustrations, not quotes, regulatory disclosures or evidence that an application will be approved.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: a 3% fee deducted from a 50,000 loan is 1,500, leaving 48,500. If interest and repayments are calculated on 50,000, evaluate them against the lower usable proceeds.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

An additional fee can change the effective cost even when the stated interest rate remains unchanged.
