The key decision
Canadian business financing should be compared using the Canadian borrower, the permitted use of funds and cash collected in CAD. A U.S. product description is not evidence that a Canadian company is eligible.
What to consider before choosing
Start with the existing bank, relevant Canadian program information and providers that identify a Canadian offering. Prepare a consistent request and ask for net proceeds, payment dates, fees and security in writing. Province, ownership, trading history and existing obligations can affect the route. Compare an alternative proposal against the same Canadian cash forecast rather than importing another market’s criteria.
Your preparation checklist
- Identify the Canadian legal borrower and province.
- Use CAD amounts and separate foreign-currency exposure.
- Compare lender and broker roles and compensation.
Check the market before comparing the product
Use the legal borrower’s actual country, operating location and currency. Do not convert another country’s eligibility rules by changing its name or currency symbol. Government-program requirements, provider policies and legal obligations are separate questions that need their own checks.
Official links provide background, not a personal quote. Verify current rules and the proposed agreement before relying on an amount, deadline or product description. Where the business operates across borders or the regulatory treatment is uncertain, obtain qualified advice and confirm whether the intermediary can handle the transaction.
Hypothetical planning example
Put the decision into numbers
Illustration: a company collecting most revenue in CAD but borrowing in USD needs to model exchange-rate movements as well as the interest or financing charge.
This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.
What to watch
A question worth asking
Which Canadian entity will provide the financing and sign the agreement?
Apply this in Canada
Start with the Canadian borrowing entity, province, operating history and cash collected in CAD. Separate sales from transfers, new borrowing and tax collected. A working-capital requirement is not the same as the purchase price of a business.
The Canada Small Business Financing Program operates through participating financial institutions. Its rules include a working-capital line-of-credit option. The lender still decides whether to approve a request. Check the current ISED rules rather than assuming that every operating expense or refinancing proposal qualifies.
Ask how existing bank security, personal guarantees and provincial requirements affect the proposed facility. If revenue and repayments use different currencies, show the cash effect of an exchange-rate change.
Take the next practical step
Compare written offers using the same net funding and cash-flow assumptions. Start with the offer comparison checklist or run a cost and cash-buffer calculation. Keep sensitive financial records out of a general enquiry until a secure document route is confirmed.
The country comparison directory separates advances from loan and credit-line alternatives.
