MCA Holdback Percentage: Measure the Cash Left to Operate

A holdback or remittance percentage determines how much of specified receipts is collected. It is different from the factor rate, which may determine the total purchased amount.

The key decision

A holdback or remittance percentage determines how much of specified receipts is collected. It is different from the factor rate, which may determine the total purchased amount.

What to consider before choosing

Ask which sales are included and whether taxes, refunds or other deductions affect the collection base. Combine the proposed share with existing claims on the same receipts. A percentage that sounds small can still consume most of a low-margin business’s operating cash. Test the effect on contribution margin rather than revenue alone.

Your preparation checklist

  • Separate factor rate from collection percentage.
  • Define qualifying receipts and settlement timing.
  • Compare the collection with gross profit and required cash costs.

Put the complete offer on one page

Record gross funding, deductions, existing balances paid, net new cash, every payment date and the total obligation. Add the proposed schedule to the existing debt calendar and compare the lowest projected cash balance, not just the average month. Check whether the offer includes mandatory fees that are not reflected in its headline price.

Ask for an early-settlement example and the consequence of slower receipts. Keep interest rates, flat charges, factor rates and annualized estimates labelled accurately. The calculators here are planning illustrations, not quotes, regulatory disclosures or evidence that an application will be approved.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: collecting 15% of 50,000 in eligible receipts removes 7,500. If only 10,000 remains after direct operating costs, that leaves 2,500 before rent, taxes and other debt.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

Sales-linked collections can fall with sales while still leaving the business under pressure.

A question worth asking

How much usable cash remains after the collection and direct costs?
