MCA Renewals and Top-Ups: Avoid Confusing Funding With New Cash

An MCA renewal can use part of the new advance to clear an old balance. The business should compare the new total obligation with the actual additional cash and any change in collections.

The key decision

An MCA renewal can use part of the new advance to clear an old balance. The business should compare the new total obligation with the actual additional cash and any change in collections.

What to consider before choosing

Obtain a current balance and a complete settlement statement. Determine whether the new cost applies to money used to pay off the old advance. Review the new purchased amount, fees and reconciliation terms. Repeated renewals can make it difficult to see how much the business has paid to obtain each increment of working cash.

Your preparation checklist

  • Separate payout of the old advance from net new proceeds.
  • Compare the remaining old schedule with the new schedule.
  • Document how the renewal improves the repayment plan.

Put the complete offer on one page

Record gross funding, deductions, existing balances paid, net new cash, every payment date and the total obligation. Add the proposed schedule to the existing debt calendar and compare the lowest projected cash balance, not just the average month. Check whether the offer includes mandatory fees that are not reflected in its headline price.

Ask for an early-settlement example and the consequence of slower receipts. Keep interest rates, flat charges, factor rates and annualized estimates labelled accurately. The calculators here are planning illustrations, not quotes, regulatory disclosures or evidence that an application will be approved.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: 80,000 of new funding less a 50,000 payout and 2,000 fee leaves 28,000. A decision based on receiving 80,000 would materially overstate the benefit.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

A renewal approval is not proof that continuing to borrow is sustainable.

A question worth asking

How much additional cash am I receiving for the full new obligation?
