Working capital, equipment and business acquisition loans

Evidence of the funding role

BDC offers business financing to businesses operating in Canada and publishes separate loan routes for these purposes.

BDC’s Canadian financing menu includes working capital, equipment and business purchase or transfer loans. A development-bank loan remains repayable borrowing.

Prepare the complete project budget and commissioning timetable. Development-bank financing is repayable finance, not a grant.

Our comparison analysis

Project costs and the period before revenue starts

Write down every cost between signing a supplier agreement and collecting the first extra revenue. An equipment purchase, staff training and an acquisition transition can have different timing. Ask which costs are financed, when funds are released and when principal repayment begins. Compare a proposal using an initial principal deferral with a schedule that amortizes immediately; a lower initial payment can leave more debt outstanding later. Explain the project’s downside case as well as its growth forecast.

Worked planning example

Illustrative: a CAD 120,000 expansion has CAD 20,000 of available owner funds. If it also needs CAD 15,000 of operating cash, the remaining funding need is CAD 115,000 before fees. A CAD 100,000 project loan alone would not cover that budget.

Hypothetical assumptions, not a provider quote or an underwriting rule.

Questions to put in writing

  • Which project and operating costs are included?
  • What interest is paid or accrued during a principal deferral?
  • How does the repayment schedule change if commissioning is delayed?

Request a dated proposal identifying the contracting lender, lessor or factor, every compulsory charge, the payment schedule and the conditions that remain before funding.
