Business Line of Credit: Draws, Fees and Repayment Rules

A business line of credit can provide reusable access up to an approved limit, subject to its agreement. The credit limit is not the same as cash freely available at all times.

The key decision

A business line of credit can provide reusable access up to an approved limit, subject to its agreement. The credit limit is not the same as cash freely available at all times.

What to consider before choosing

Check how each draw is repaid, whether amounts become available again, and whether the provider can review, reduce or suspend availability. Some facilities combine balances into one payment; others attach a schedule to each draw. Include draw fees, unused-line fees if applicable and any minimum draw. Model the largest balance you expect to use rather than assuming the line stays nearly empty.

Your preparation checklist

  • Confirm whether the facility is genuinely revolving.
  • Ask how another draw changes the payment.
  • Check review dates and conditions on future availability.

Build a one-page funding brief

Write down the amount the business actually needs to receive, the purpose, the payment deadline and the cash event that repays the facility. Include a current debt schedule rather than discussing the new proposal in isolation. When comparing structures, use the same starting assumptions. A larger approved amount, a longer term or a smaller instalment changes the decision and should not be mistaken for a better price.

A bank, programme lender, non-bank provider and broker can play different roles. Identify the actual contracting party and ask which conditions remain. Where the contract, guarantee or local regulatory position is unclear, obtain qualified advice before signing.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: a 75,000 limit with 30,000 outstanding does not guarantee another 45,000 can be drawn immediately. Existing reserves, review conditions or a minimum-draw rule may affect usable availability.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

Do not describe a line as permanent cash. Plan for the possibility that access changes at review.

A question worth asking

What would trigger a limit reduction or refusal of another draw?
