The key decision
A useful business loan solves a defined cash need and has a repayment schedule the business can support. Start with the purpose, net amount required and date the financed activity should generate cash, not the largest advertised approval.
What to consider before choosing
Write a one-page funding brief. Separate a one-off project from a recurring operating gap, and separate an investment from losses that borrowing cannot fix. Then compare a term loan, revolving credit and any sales-based option against the same cash forecast. Ask for a written offer that names the provider and makes the total obligation clear.
Your preparation checklist
- State the exact use of funds and payment deadline.
- Show the source of repayment, including a slower-sales case.
- Compare net proceeds after fees and existing payouts.
Build a one-page funding brief
Write down the amount the business actually needs to receive, the purpose, the payment deadline and the cash event that repays the facility. Include a current debt schedule rather than discussing the new proposal in isolation. When comparing structures, use the same starting assumptions. A larger approved amount, a longer term or a smaller instalment changes the decision and should not be mistaken for a better price.
A bank, programme lender, non-bank provider and broker can play different roles. Identify the actual contracting party and ask which conditions remain. Where the contract, guarantee or local regulatory position is unclear, obtain qualified advice before signing.
Hypothetical planning example
Put the decision into numbers
Illustration: a business needs 40,000 to complete a profitable order and expects collection in 90 days. A proposal that removes 6,000 each month before the customer pays may create a new shortfall even when its total cost looks acceptable.
This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.
