Business Loan vs Line of Credit: One Expense or Repeated Gaps?

A term loan often suits a defined lump-sum requirement. A revolving line may suit repeated draws and repayments. Choose by the cash pattern rather than assuming either structure is always cheaper.

The key decision

A term loan often suits a defined lump-sum requirement. A revolving line may suit repeated draws and repayments. Choose by the cash pattern rather than assuming either structure is always cheaper.

What to consider before choosing

Compare a realistic draw schedule, not simply each maximum amount. Include any fees per draw and the payment after a second withdrawal. A line that is fully drawn immediately and never repaid may behave more like long-term borrowing with review risk. A term loan can also be wasteful when substantial funds sit unused.

Your preparation checklist

  • Write the expected dates and amounts of each cash need.
  • Compare payments after the busiest borrowing month.
  • Check renewal, review and early-payout conditions.

Build a one-page funding brief

Write down the amount the business actually needs to receive, the purpose, the payment deadline and the cash event that repays the facility. Include a current debt schedule rather than discussing the new proposal in isolation. When comparing structures, use the same starting assumptions. A larger approved amount, a longer term or a smaller instalment changes the decision and should not be mistaken for a better price.

A bank, programme lender, non-bank provider and broker can play different roles. Identify the actual contracting party and ask which conditions remain. Where the contract, guarantee or local regulatory position is unclear, obtain qualified advice before signing.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: a single 40,000 purchase differs from four 10,000 seasonal gaps that clear after customer collections. The same annual total does not mean the same product is appropriate.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

Reusable credit remains subject to the agreement and availability conditions.

A question worth asking

Does the balance naturally return to a low level between borrowing periods?

Keep the country and product clear
