The key decision
Working-capital borrowing should bridge a measurable gap between operating payments and customer collections. The right amount is linked to the largest projected shortfall, a reasonable buffer and a credible repayment source.
What to consider before choosing
Prepare a weekly cash schedule that starts with available bank cash, not accounting revenue. Add expected collections and subtract payroll, suppliers, occupancy, tax reserves and existing debt. Do not count unsigned orders or unused credit as cash already available. Use a downside scenario to see whether the proposed financing merely postpones the problem.
Your preparation checklist
- Identify the week with the lowest projected cash balance.
- Separate recurring shortages from a temporary timing gap.
- Match the repayment pattern to cash collections.
Build a one-page funding brief
Write down the amount the business actually needs to receive, the purpose, the payment deadline and the cash event that repays the facility. Include a current debt schedule rather than discussing the new proposal in isolation. When comparing structures, use the same starting assumptions. A larger approved amount, a longer term or a smaller instalment changes the decision and should not be mistaken for a better price.
A bank, programme lender, non-bank provider and broker can play different roles. Identify the actual contracting party and ask which conditions remain. Where the contract, guarantee or local regulatory position is unclear, obtain qualified advice before signing.
Hypothetical planning example
Put the decision into numbers
Illustration: a profitable contract needs 30,000 in labour and supplies before a 45,000 customer payment arrives. Funding the timing gap may be sensible; paying back most of the advance before that collection may not be.
This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.
