The key decision

Contract mobilization can require cash for labour, materials and setup before the first customer payment. A useful facility follows the contract milestones and realistic certification or acceptance dates.

What to consider before choosing

Read the payment terms, retainage or holdbacks, and reasons a milestone can be disputed. Build a budget that includes the cost of reaching the first payable stage. Compare a working-capital loan with negotiated deposits or staged customer payments. Avoid using the contract’s full value as if it were immediately collectible.

Your preparation checklist

  • Map cash costs to each payable milestone.
  • Separate earned revenue from cash eligible for collection.
  • Include delays in approval or certification.

Translate the plan into a weekly cash forecast

Start with cash that is genuinely available. Add expected customer collections and subtract suppliers, payroll, premises, tax reserves and existing financing. Insert the proposed payment dates and identify the lowest balance. Separate sales growth from cash collection: an invoice is not money available to make a payment today.

Test both weaker sales and a delay in a major receipt. These are different risks and can require different solutions. Consider a smaller staged project, customer deposits or revised supplier terms alongside borrowing. Keep enough operating cash to deliver the work that is supposed to repay the facility.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: a contractor spends 35,000 to reach a milestone, but payment follows approval and then a further payment period. Financing only the work period ignores the collection delay.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

A signed contract does not remove execution, dispute or collection risk.

A question worth asking

When does the first milestone become payable, and when is cash expected to arrive?
