The key decision
Supplier-payment financing can bridge a timing gap, but compare it with available supplier terms and the economics of the order. Do not finance an early-payment discount that costs more than it saves.
What to consider before choosing
Ask whether deposits, staged deliveries or a reasonable payment plan reduce the peak cash need. Preserve relationships by communicating accurately rather than promising unconfirmed funding. Compare the total cost of each route and the cash left for payroll and taxes. Include any restrictions on using financing for overdue balances.
Your preparation checklist
- Confirm the supplier’s actual deadline and alternatives.
- Compare the discount with the full funding cost.
- Match repayment to collections from the funded purchase.
Translate the plan into a weekly cash forecast
Start with cash that is genuinely available. Add expected customer collections and subtract suppliers, payroll, premises, tax reserves and existing financing. Insert the proposed payment dates and identify the lowest balance. Separate sales growth from cash collection: an invoice is not money available to make a payment today.
Test both weaker sales and a delay in a major receipt. These are different risks and can require different solutions. Consider a smaller staged project, customer deposits or revised supplier terms alongside borrowing. Keep enough operating cash to deliver the work that is supposed to repay the facility.
Hypothetical planning example
Put the decision into numbers
Illustration: a 2% discount on a 50,000 invoice saves 1,000. Paying 4,000 in financing cost solely to obtain that discount does not improve the transaction.
This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.
