E-Commerce Business Loans: Use Net Settlements, Not Order Volume

An e-commerce financing application should explain the difference between order value and cash arriving in the bank. Fees, refunds, reserves and advertising costs can materially change repayment capacity.

The key decision

An e-commerce financing application should explain the difference between order value and cash arriving in the bank. Fees, refunds, reserves and advertising costs can materially change repayment capacity.

What to consider before choosing

Map the main platforms and payment processors, then reconcile their settlements with the bank. Identify existing platform advances and deductions. Compare loan payments with net contribution after fulfillment and customer acquisition. If funding is based on revenue, ask what revenue means in the agreement and how refunds or platform holds are treated.

Your preparation checklist

  • List every platform and existing collection against its receipts.
  • Reconcile gross orders with net cash settlements.
  • Test a return spike or temporary platform reserve.

Use the business’s own evidence

Industry labels help organize questions, but they do not establish eligibility or a standard borrowing amount. Use the company’s actual margins, collection history and operating commitments. Separate recurring trade from one-off events, pass-through receipts and money committed to future delivery.

Prepare the records that explain the business model: settlement reports, accepted invoices, signed contracts or a stock budget as relevant. Share sensitive documents only through a confirmed secure process. Compare financing against the contribution the funded activity generates after its delivery costs, not against gross sales alone.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: a store reporting 100,000 in orders may receive far less after returns, fees, advertising and fulfillment. An obligation sized to the order total can overstate what the business can repay.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

Do not assume platform growth or a high sales month will continue unchanged.
