Restaurant Business Loans: Compare Payments With Your Margins

Restaurant financing should be assessed against cash left after food, labour, occupancy and taxes. High card sales do not automatically make a loan or sales-linked advance affordable.

The key decision

Restaurant financing should be assessed against cash left after food, labour, occupancy and taxes. High card sales do not automatically make a loan or sales-linked advance affordable.

What to consider before choosing

Separate dine-in, delivery and event receipts because their settlement timing and margins can differ. Reconcile delivery-platform deductions with bank deposits. Identify whether the request funds a profitable short-term need or recurring operating losses. For an MCA, ask which receipts are included and how collections change in a quieter trading period.

Your preparation checklist

  • Prepare bank and relevant processor settlement records.
  • Budget food, wages, rent and tax reserves before new payments.
  • Stress-test a quieter month and delayed platform settlements.

Use the business’s own evidence

Industry labels help organize questions, but they do not establish eligibility or a standard borrowing amount. Use the company’s actual margins, collection history and operating commitments. Separate recurring trade from one-off events, pass-through receipts and money committed to future delivery.

Prepare the records that explain the business model: settlement reports, accepted invoices, signed contracts or a stock budget as relevant. Share sensitive documents only through a confirmed secure process. Compare financing against the contribution the funded activity generates after its delivery costs, not against gross sales alone.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: 90,000 in monthly sales may leave only 9,000 after operating costs. A 10% collection against gross eligible sales could consume that margin before other debt and taxes.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

Do not size financing from gross sales without checking contribution and cash timing.

A question worth asking

How much cash remains after the collection during the restaurant’s quietest period?
