Why Growing Businesses Run Short of Cash: Finance the Cash Cycle

Growth can increase the amount paid to suppliers and staff before customers pay. A profitable business can therefore need more working capital as sales expand.

The key decision

Growth can increase the amount paid to suppliers and staff before customers pay. A profitable business can therefore need more working capital as sales expand.

What to consider before choosing

Measure how cash moves through inventory, delivery and collection. Use a weekly forecast to estimate the peak additional requirement. Check whether customer deposits, shorter payment terms or supplier arrangements reduce the need. Compare financing cost with the incremental contribution from growth, not with total company revenue.

Your preparation checklist

  • Calculate the cash required before each new sale is collected.
  • Model the peak balance at the higher sales level.
  • Include financing cost in the incremental growth margin.

Translate the plan into a weekly cash forecast

Start with cash that is genuinely available. Add expected customer collections and subtract suppliers, payroll, premises, tax reserves and existing financing. Insert the proposed payment dates and identify the lowest balance. Separate sales growth from cash collection: an invoice is not money available to make a payment today.

Test both weaker sales and a delay in a major receipt. These are different risks and can require different solutions. Consider a smaller staged project, customer deposits or revised supplier terms alongside borrowing. Keep enough operating cash to deliver the work that is supposed to repay the facility.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: doubling monthly orders may require a larger supplier deposit and another payroll cycle before collections double. The extra cash gap can appear before the extra profit.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

Growth that destroys margin or depends on uncollectible sales is not improved by financing.
