The key decision
Hospitality financing should account for booking deposits, cancellations, seasonal occupancy and the timing of operating costs. A busy reservation calendar does not mean all associated cash is safely available to repay debt.
What to consider before choosing
Review actual settlement history and distinguish refundable deposits from earned receipts. Include staffing, food or service costs, occupancy and tax reserves. Test an event cancellation or weaker season. A fixed payment schedule and a sales-linked advance can affect the business differently, so compare the written collection mechanism rather than its label.
Your preparation checklist
- Separate deposits and future-service obligations.
- Model seasonality and cancellations using the business’s records.
- Keep operating reserves for the low period.
Use the business’s own evidence
Industry labels help organize questions, but they do not establish eligibility or a standard borrowing amount. Use the company’s actual margins, collection history and operating commitments. Separate recurring trade from one-off events, pass-through receipts and money committed to future delivery.
Prepare the records that explain the business model: settlement reports, accepted invoices, signed contracts or a stock budget as relevant. Share sensitive documents only through a confirmed secure process. Compare financing against the contribution the funded activity generates after its delivery costs, not against gross sales alone.

Put the decision into numbers
Illustration: 30,000 of event deposits may be committed to delivery costs or refundable under the booking terms. Treating the entire balance as free working cash overstates capacity.

What to watch
A question worth asking
