Marketing Agency Business Loans: Separate Client Spend From Margin

An agency’s cash receipts may include client advertising budgets or other pass-through costs. Separate those amounts from cash available to support a business loan.

The key decision

An agency’s cash receipts may include client advertising budgets or other pass-through costs. Separate those amounts from cash available to support a business loan.

What to consider before choosing

Reconcile retainers, project fees and media spend. Explain whether the agency prepays third parties or only manages client-funded accounts. Assess client concentration, cancellation rights and the gap between staff costs and collections. A financing forecast should be based on the contribution the agency keeps, not the full value of campaigns billed.

Your preparation checklist

  • Separate earned fees from client-funded third-party spend.
  • Review retainer cancellation and payment terms.
  • Model the loss or delay of a major client.

Use the business’s own evidence

Industry labels help organize questions, but they do not establish eligibility or a standard borrowing amount. Use the company’s actual margins, collection history and operating commitments. Separate recurring trade from one-off events, pass-through receipts and money committed to future delivery.

Prepare the records that explain the business model: settlement reports, accepted invoices, signed contracts or a stock budget as relevant. Share sensitive documents only through a confirmed secure process. Compare financing against the contribution the funded activity generates after its delivery costs, not against gross sales alone.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: 120,000 of invoices including 80,000 of media costs does not provide 120,000 of agency revenue available for debt service. The retained margin and timing are decisive.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

Do not use money committed to client services as an unrestricted repayment source.

A question worth asking

What portion of receipts is genuinely available after delivering the contracted work?
