MCA vs Line of Credit: Compare Flexibility Without the Hype

An MCA and a business line of credit provide different kinds of flexibility. A sales-linked collection mechanism is not the same as a revolving facility that can be drawn again after repayment.

The key decision

An MCA and a business line of credit provide different kinds of flexibility. A sales-linked collection mechanism is not the same as a revolving facility that can be drawn again after repayment.

What to consider before choosing

Clarify whether the next funding event is a permitted draw or a new application. Ask how a renewal affects the old balance and whether cost is charged on amounts used to settle it. For a line, check draw fees and limit reviews. For an advance, check purchased receipts, collection method and reconciliation.

Your preparation checklist

  • Separate reusable availability from a possible renewal offer.
  • Compare the cost of the second funding need.
  • Measure net new cash after any prior balance is settled.

Build a one-page funding brief

Write down the amount the business actually needs to receive, the purpose, the payment deadline and the cash event that repays the facility. Include a current debt schedule rather than discussing the new proposal in isolation. When comparing structures, use the same starting assumptions. A larger approved amount, a longer term or a smaller instalment changes the decision and should not be mistaken for a better price.

A bank, programme lender, non-bank provider and broker can play different roles. Identify the actual contracting party and ask which conditions remain. Where the contract, guarantee or local regulatory position is unclear, obtain qualified advice before signing.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: a 50,000 renewal that pays out 35,000 of an old advance provides only 15,000 before fees. It should not be compared with a new 50,000 line draw as though the benefit were equal.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

Do not rely on promised future top-ups to make today’s funding affordable.
