The key decision
With revolving credit, repaid principal may become available for another draw under the agreement. With non-revolving credit, repayments normally do not restore borrowing availability. Confirm the actual facility rather than relying on the word flexible.
What to consider before choosing
Read the draw period, maturity, repayment schedule and conditions for availability. A facility can allow several initial draws without being revolving. Another product may require a fresh application each time. Model the second cash need now so that the first facility does not create a false sense of permanent access.
Your preparation checklist
- Confirm whether repaid amounts restore the limit.
- Check the end of the draw period and the final maturity.
- Ask what can suspend further borrowing.
Build a one-page funding brief
Write down the amount the business actually needs to receive, the purpose, the payment deadline and the cash event that repays the facility. Include a current debt schedule rather than discussing the new proposal in isolation. When comparing structures, use the same starting assumptions. A larger approved amount, a longer term or a smaller instalment changes the decision and should not be mistaken for a better price.
A bank, programme lender, non-bank provider and broker can play different roles. Identify the actual contracting party and ask which conditions remain. Where the contract, guarantee or local regulatory position is unclear, obtain qualified advice before signing.
Hypothetical planning example
Put the decision into numbers
Illustration: repaying 10,000 on a 30,000 non-revolving facility may reduce debt without making another 10,000 available. That matters when payroll funding is needed again next month.
