Seasonal Business Loans: Use the Low Season in the Forecast

Seasonal borrowing should be designed around the full cash cycle, including the period when receipts fall. A strong peak month does not prove that fixed collections are manageable year-round.

The key decision

Seasonal borrowing should be designed around the full cash cycle, including the period when receipts fall. A strong peak month does not prove that fixed collections are manageable year-round.

What to consider before choosing

Show at least one representative seasonal cycle where records are available. Separate pre-season purchases from the operating losses of a quiet period. Test weather, event cancellations or a slower start using assumptions appropriate to the business. For sales-linked funding, verify whether and how collections actually adjust.

Your preparation checklist

  • Map preparation costs and peak collection months.
  • Use a low-season repayment scenario.
  • Keep reserves for the transition after peak trading.

Translate the plan into a weekly cash forecast

Start with cash that is genuinely available. Add expected customer collections and subtract suppliers, payroll, premises, tax reserves and existing financing. Insert the proposed payment dates and identify the lowest balance. Separate sales growth from cash collection: an invoice is not money available to make a payment today.

Test both weaker sales and a delay in a major receipt. These are different risks and can require different solutions. Consider a smaller staged project, customer deposits or revised supplier terms alongside borrowing. Keep enough operating cash to deliver the work that is supposed to repay the facility.

Hypothetical planning example

Put the decision into numbers

Illustration: a business funds stock in March and collects most sales in June. Heavy April and May repayments can exhaust cash before the successful season arrives.

This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.

What to watch

Do not annualize the best month and present it as stable monthly revenue.
