The key decision
Short-term borrowing can suit a defined, near-term use of funds, but the shorter repayment period can make each collection demanding. Compare the cash schedule, not just the total fee or quoted rate.
What to consider before choosing
Map payments to a calendar that includes payroll and tax dates. A weekly obligation can be difficult for a business paid by customers once a month. Ask whether the stated term is a fixed maturity or an estimate, and obtain the early-payout calculation. A lower total charge does not automatically mean the facility is easier to repay.
Your preparation checklist
- Use actual collection dates in the forecast.
- Check whether charges change when repaid early.
- Keep a buffer for a delayed customer payment.
Build a one-page funding brief
Write down the amount the business actually needs to receive, the purpose, the payment deadline and the cash event that repays the facility. Include a current debt schedule rather than discussing the new proposal in isolation. When comparing structures, use the same starting assumptions. A larger approved amount, a longer term or a smaller instalment changes the decision and should not be mistaken for a better price.
A bank, programme lender, non-bank provider and broker can play different roles. Identify the actual contracting party and ask which conditions remain. Where the contract, guarantee or local regulatory position is unclear, obtain qualified advice before signing.
Hypothetical planning example
Put the decision into numbers
Illustration: repaying 60,000 over 20 weeks requires 3,000 a week before any other obligations. Compare that schedule with a longer proposal using the same net proceeds, not simply its lower total cost.
This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.
What to watch
A question worth asking
