The key decision
Debt-service coverage compares a defined cash or earnings measure with debt payments. Different providers use different definitions and adjustments, so ask for the exact calculation rather than relying on a universal cutoff.
What to consider before choosing
Reconcile the numerator with the financial statements and explain non-recurring adjustments. Include existing obligations and the proposed facility in the denominator on a consistent period. Annual coverage can hide monthly or weekly shortages, so also prepare a dated cash forecast. A ratio should support analysis, not replace it.
Your preparation checklist
- Ask which earnings or cash-flow measure is used.
- Include all relevant debt-service obligations.
- Test seasonal periods separately from annual totals.
Prepare an accurate file, then choose the route
A useful application connects the funding purpose with current business records and a credible source of repayment. Keep entity details, ownership, reported revenue and bank information consistent. Explain material changes rather than trying to make the business appear more established or profitable than the records support.
Ask what information is needed at the initial review and what can wait until a secure document route is confirmed. Do not send passwords, identity numbers or full bank records in a general enquiry. An approval is only useful if the final structure is affordable and suitable for the business.
Hypothetical planning example
Put the decision into numbers
Illustration: 120,000 of defined annual cash available divided by 100,000 of annual debt service equals 1.20 under those assumptions. That does not prove every weekly payment can be met.
This is an illustration, not a customer case, provider quote, approval or market benchmark. Unless a currency is stated, use one consistent currency throughout your own calculation.
