The key decision
A personal guarantee can make an owner or director responsible for specified business obligations. Understand its scope independently of the company’s repayment plan.
What to consider before choosing
Read whether the guarantee is limited, continuing or connected to future borrowing, and obtain qualified legal advice when needed. Ask how it is released, whether it survives a sale or resignation, and whether several guarantors can be pursued. Do not assume a limited company eliminates personal exposure once a guarantee is signed.
Your preparation checklist
- Identify each guarantor and the obligations covered.
- Ask about limits, duration and release conditions.
- Separate guarantee exposure from pledged business collateral.
Prepare an accurate file, then choose the route
A useful application connects the funding purpose with current business records and a credible source of repayment. Keep entity details, ownership, reported revenue and bank information consistent. Explain material changes rather than trying to make the business appear more established or profitable than the records support.
Ask what information is needed at the initial review and what can wait until a secure document route is confirmed. Do not send passwords, identity numbers or full bank records in a general enquiry. An approval is only useful if the final structure is affordable and suitable for the business.

Put the decision into numbers
Illustration: an owner who leaves the company may still need a formal release rather than assuming the guarantee ends with their role. The signed documents determine the position.
