The key decision
Tax arrears can affect a financing review and the business’s cash commitments. Establish the actual tax position and obtain appropriate tax advice before assuming new debt is the solution.
What to consider before choosing
Prepare accurate amounts, due dates and any existing payment arrangements. Ask the relevant tax authority or adviser about available routes and consequences. Compare the proposed financing cost with the business’s ability to meet both current tax obligations and any arrears plan. Do not use money held for tax as if it were free operating cash.
Your preparation checklist
- Confirm the balance and status with reliable records.
- Include current taxes and arrears payments in the forecast.
- Disclose material obligations to the provider.
Prepare an accurate file, then choose the route
A useful application connects the funding purpose with current business records and a credible source of repayment. Keep entity details, ownership, reported revenue and bank information consistent. Explain material changes rather than trying to make the business appear more established or profitable than the records support.
Ask what information is needed at the initial review and what can wait until a secure document route is confirmed. Do not send passwords, identity numbers or full bank records in a general enquiry. An approval is only useful if the final structure is affordable and suitable for the business.
Hypothetical planning example
Put the decision into numbers
Illustration: borrowing to clear arrears does not solve the problem if the business continues to spend current tax reserves. The budget needs a sustainable reserve as well as the payout.

What to watch
